Google is behind the latest installation of a Bitcoin ATM in London, it has emerged, with its East London Campus hosting the company’s latest foray into digital currency.

The machine, which is the sixth in the UK capital to allow purchase of BTC with a credit or debit card, is a joint venture between Google and three start-ups Callsign, Wyre and Bitbuddy. The first two are incumbent Campus entities, while Bitbuddy is an unaffiliated third party, IB Times notes.

“Having one of the UK's first BTMs (bitcoin telling machine) at Campus London is only going to encourage more innovation, experimentation and, as a result, transformative British companies,” Sarah Drinkwater, head of Campus London told the publication. more

CurrentC has already lost users to Apple

Apple Pay rival CurrentC is already spilling customer data, despite the mobile payments system only being available in a limited pilot program, according to an email sent out to partners. According to the message, which began hitting inboxes earlier today, the big-retailer backed venture to replace credit cards has seen email addresses of some of its early users acquired by unnamed hackers. However, CurrentC insists that it's only been those contact details and not payment information that has been taken. "Within the last 36 hours, we learned that unauthorized third parties obtained the e-mail addresses of some of you," CurrentC said in its statement. "Based on investigations conducted by MCX security personnel, only these e-mail addresses were involved and no other information." Hacks are generally embarrassing for any company, but when you're trying to position yourself as the next-generation of super secure payment technology, it's even more of an issue. Factor in the ongoing battle over customer experience waged between CurrentC, Apple Pay, and others, as they each jostle for space in the smartphone payment sector, and the cringe-factor increases exponentially.

The acquisition gives the Chinese firm control of the unit's Moto and Droid-branded handsets as well as its 3,500 employees, 2,800 of whom are based in the US. Lenovo said the deal made it the world's third bestselling smartphone-maker after Apple and Samsung. That knocks its country-mate Xiaomi back down into fourth spot, based on data from two market research reports. Lenovo stated that a total of 100 million mobile devices were on course to be shipped from its existing mobile phone business combined with that of Motorola's over the current fiscal year, which ends in March.
